This week is National Apprenticeship Week. This is a week for employers and apprentices to come together to celebrate the success of their apprenticeships whilst encouraging others to start a career as an apprentice.
Here at Coretek, we have always supported apprentices. Previously, we have had apprentices in finance, marketing and IT. We wanted to hear from a few of our employees who had previously been or are still apprentices.
“My apprenticeship was the Level 3 (Advanced) IT Apprenticeship Gold Standard Programme which I studied at the Highbury College in Portsmouth. I received 2 qualifications.
BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Professional competence for IT and telecoms professionals – During this course I had to demonstrate competence in using software & hardware maintenance, and demonstrating an understanding of a wide range of end-user support methods. Work for this course was completed both in the college and at the workplace, with a correspondent from the college meeting me in work time to set curriculum based tasks which suited the work I carry out on a daily basis at Coretek.
These tasks included demonstrating an understanding of health & safety procedures, creating a project plan documentation based on the use of Microsoft Project and implement the project into a real-life situation, as well as displaying an understanding of advanced concepts found within the IT industry.
CompTIA Network + – I studied in both my own time and at the college for the CompTIA Network+ exam. I believe the reason that I was able to pass this exam was partly due to my own studies but also as the exam material had a lot in common with my job which I had been carrying out with Coretek.
Coretek gave me the time and space I needed to study for the exam and complete the coursework which was required by the college. Without the freedom to schedule time during the working day to get these tasks done, I doubt I would have been successful in completing the apprenticeship. The fact that Coretek was as flexible as they had been with me during my apprenticeship is something that I am truly grateful for.”
“I received a Level 3 Diploma in Digital Marketing for my apprenticeship. I studied this through 3aaa Apprenticeships in Southampton.
This diploma consisted of one day of work within the apprenticeship centre a month and then tutor visits every few months to the workplace. This course was made up of multiple modules, to name a few; The Business Environment, Social Media Concepts and Branding, SEO and Paid Search, Email Marketing, Marketing on Mobile Devices, Website Creation, CMS Management and more.
Coretek really helped with my progress in this apprenticeship. Whether that was getting help on work I didn’t understand or being given as much time as I needed to get all of the work completed. This was pivotal in the completion and passing of this apprenticeship. For that, I am very grateful!”
We believe that apprentices are a great addition to the company and are vital for bringing a fresh approach to the business.

A Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR) solution, as well as the associated technical and business plans, ensure that required (or all) business services can continue in the event of a critical service outage that exceeds a business defined limit. This outage may affect local infrastructure, or it may affect additional infrastructure or services that are business critical but hosted externally to the business. These external services may be covered by their own BCDR guarantees.
Essentially, Disaster Recovery is seen as a subset to Business Continuity which deals with many business wide concerns and plans for different types of unforeseen issues, whereas Disaster Recovery is a more focused look at how IT (and associated services like telephony) would continue in the event of a critical outage.
Business requirements for BCDR are the most important pieces of information to get right and should be done before any potential solution is considered. This is because a business with requirements for a same day Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and a 5-minute Recovery Point Objective (RPO), would require a very different (and generally more expensive) solution to a business that has requirements for a 5-day RTO and a one day RPO.
The Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is the period of time following an incident within which a product, activity or service must be resumed, or resources must be recovered. For products, services and activities, the recovery time objective must be less than the time it would take for the adverse impacts that would arise as a result of not providing a product/service or performing an activity to become unacceptable. – ISO 22301
The Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is the point to which information used by an activity must be restored to enable the activity to operate on resumption. This can also be referred to as “maximum data loss”. – ISO 22301
Business requirements for both the return to operation time, as well as the return point all affect the technical requirements and the end solution, as these business requirements can have wide ranging consequences on the plan and the infrastructure used for recovery.
As recovery objectives shorten, effort is usually put into providing high availability or ready to go substitute infrastructure for business services, as opposed to restoring services from a backup. As this involves either additional infrastructure sharing a load or standby infrastructure ready to step in, resources must be allocated to check and maintain this additional infrastructure.
For short recovery objectives it is also absolutely critical to place priorities around business services so that if multiple services are affected in the event of a disaster, work can be correctly prioritized to restore the business critical services first. This is instrumental in the formulation of a successful BCDR plan.
If either the recovery requirements are incorrect, or change, it is imperative that everyone concerned be notified immediately, as these objectives have a major effect on the solution and the technologies that provide it.
Coretek have extensive experience in providing tailored BCDR solutions for almost any business requirements. Solution options are available leveraging either our CoretekCloud platform or a leading third party public cloud provider. Following on from our successful event at Microsoft HQ, we visited Cowplain School so they could receive their prize from being the runners up on the day!
The theme for the Microsoft event was ‘Office 365 in Education’, so we decided to develop and expand on this topic in order to enhance the students knowledge on what really is Office 365.
The day consisted of two 2 hour sessions with the year 7 pupils at Cowplain School. We begun the day with a presentation that outlined what Office 365 is and how to sign up. We then touched on each of the Office 365 apps and how they can be used in education. The last app of the presentation was Sway, this is wen we introduced the days activity. The pupils were tasked with creating a Sway on their school, to be showcased at the upcoming open evening for new potential year 7 students.
The students separated off into 3 IT suites and begun the activity. The students currently have experience with Google Drive but wanted to learn more about Office 365 in order to begin using it at home and at school. So this was a totally new experience for all of the students. What followed was an array of collaborative, exciting sways that outlined why they enjoy their school. Throughout this activity we took into account how the students were working and how they were using the Office 365 app.
We gathered back in the gym at the end of each session to have a roundup of the days activities. We then announced a group from each class who really impressed us with their work. Each group was awarded with an Amazon voucher to use at their pleasure.
This day enabled us to teach many students about the wonders of Office 365 and how each of the apps can help within their education. It also meant the students were able develop within an app they had never even heard of before! Overall, a successful day!
