Tech-Trends-2018

The Top 6 Tech Trends to watch out for in 2018

We are setting in comfortably into 2018 now and there is already an array of exciting tech trends for 2018. We are going to take a look at some of the top Tech Trends for 2018, some showcased at the CES 2018.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence has already done some great things, particularly in the medical industry. Already, there are developed programmes that can identify the signs of Alzheimer’s disease up to ten years before the symptoms appear. It can even detect bowel cancer during a colonoscopy. It is predicted that AI will just keep on developing.

It is thought that in the future, everybody will have a virtual assistant i.e. Alexa or Google. These virtual assistants will just keep on getting smarter, to maybe even writing news reports or getting dinner ready. But as far as 2018 is concerned, AI is going to be on the rise and just prepare yourself for more from Artificial Intelligence.

Wireless Charging

Although wireless charging is definitely not new, it is a trend that was showcased at the CES 2018 and seems like it is really going to take off. Wireless charging is charging your device without having to physically plug it in, this is usually done through charging pads which you can place your device on top of. Manufacturers like Belkin an iOttie showcased their new products at CES 2018. Even PowerMat has now adopted the new QI standard. So it seems that one single charging method for iOS and Android has a great possibility to be very popular this year. There is even the opportunity to be charging wearables such as the Apple Watch.

Smart Cities

There have recently been articles in the media in relation to developments on products that will make your city a smart city. The first of these would be the developments to roads. It has been rumoured that the tech giant Qualcomm are investing in the car industry by creating roads that can charge electric cars. Then there are the Dominos self-driving pizza delivery cars. We will hear a lot more from new developments within the smart cities trend this year.

5G

You may of heard of 4G, well now there is 5G. 5G is a type of wireless technology that is being raved about at the moment. 5G connectivity will result in greater capacity, higher speeds and lower latency. Lower latency means that there will be far fewer delays in the devices that it powers. It has been said that 5G has the potential to be 10 times faster than 4G. We look forward to hearing more about how 5G is developing in 2018.

Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality really came to surface last year within the ‘Pokemon Go‘ app. This became very popular very quickly. Well, expect to see Augmented Reality to surface again this year even bigger and better. It is predicted that there will be many exciting apps such as being able to look at your living room through a camera and placing a sofa in position to see if it will look right. You can expect to see everything from virtual clothes apps to more games like Pokemon Go.

Displays that disappear

TVs are everywhere nowadays and they take up lots of valuable space. Now LG have come up with a brand new concept which they launched at the CES 2018 to help save space. It is a 65-inch OLED TV that rolls up like a scroll. They exhibited this with a white box that held the spooling mechanism inside which rolled up the TV. This is a great development and leads you to think of a whole load of possibilities. You could carry a display box with you and then roll out a blueprint anywhere you like.

We are very excited for what is to come in 2018 for the industry. Let us know what you think about the above exciting tech trends!

This month's Cooltek

The Nintendo SNES Mini, brand new Amazon Echo Plus and more from this months Top Gadgets!

Last month our team have been loving the new releases! The Nintendo Classic Mini SNES and the very new Amazon Echo Plus have been the hot topics here as well as a very practical app for your storage if you are an Android user!

Links2SD

If you are an Android user and find yourself using up your storage and then having to delete various apps and images to get more on there, then this app would be ideal for you. Link2SD is an application manager that makes it easy to move applications to the SD card. Link2SD uses a secondary partition on your SD card and uses it as another segment of internal storage. There is a multitude of exciting features such ‘force move’ which allows you to move apps over to SD even if the app does not support moving to SD. The ability to link apk, dex and lib files of apps to the SD card, freeze and un-freeze system and users applications and much more. If you regularly find yourself running out of storage on your Android phone then this is worth looking into, you can download it here.

Nintendo Classic Mini Super Nintendo Entertainment System

Nintendo Classic Mini SNES was released last Friday and it is so popular that stock is already sparse! The SNES Mini is a tiny version of the original console from the 90’s and comes with 21 games from that era. It comes with two controllers that connect via USB. It also comes with a HDMI cable so that you can connect it to the TV. A new feature that has been added is that you can now rewind up to five minutes of gameplay. Also you can wrap a border around your games with the new Frame feature. If you have an Nintendo Wii, you can simply plug the Wii Classic Controllers and accessories in and play! Due to how popular the SNES Classic Mini was in the 90’s, it sold out mostly just from the pre-sale and they completely sold out on launch day. However, you may be able to pre-order on Amazon France. Although this is the France stock, UK members are still able to pre-order.

Amazon Echo Plus

You would probably think that the Echo Plus will have a whole new look, but it actually imitates the old version. But dont be put off by this as there are many new changes beneath this. The first thing that has been added is Zig-Bee friendly hub. The purpose of the Zig-Bee is that it allows the Echo Plus to easily connect to a wider range of smart home devices. All you have to do is say ‘Alexa, discover devices.’ The Echo Plus is compatible with everything from light bulbs to locks. Alexa will automatically name the devices too so the first light set up will be called ‘first light.’ Amazon is even going to ship every Echo Plus with a Philips Hue light bulb so that users can see the real potential from this new device. Additional features are pretty much the same as the new Amazon Echo, including a dedicated woofer, a tweeter and Dolby-certified audio which is meant to make the sound a whole lot better. As well as this, it also has 7 microphones that can hear you from any direction, even when music is playing. The Echo Plus is even cheaper than its predeccesor selling for $149.99, you can pre-order it now.

Why do I need a Wi-Fi Survey or plan and what does it involve?

Are you looking to install a new wireless network? Or do you have an existing wireless network which is performing poorly?

If so, the first step is carrying out a wireless survey. We have put together this short guide to explain to process involved and what you should look for.

To begin with, you need to define what you really want from your wireless network. You may already have a strong idea of your needs, or you may not have any idea at all. If you find yourself in this situation, we have provided three vital questions to help:

  1. What is your desired coverage area? Where do you need wireless in your premises?
  2. What is your device capacity? How many devices are you planning on using?
  3. What will you use the network for? What programs or services will use the wireless? Will this be simple web browsing or something more complex?

Once you have answered these three questions, you should now be able to answer the question “What do you want from your wireless network?.

The next step is knowing if your network meets the three requirements listed above. This is done through a Wi-Fi survey or plan, which explains the reason for a survey and why it’s so vital. If you skip your Wi-Fi survey, it makes it much more difficult to ensure your wireless network will sufficiently meet your requirements.

Planning - APs-5GHz

Here you can see the results of a site survey using Ekahau.

So, we need a survey but how do we go about conducting the survey, making sure all aspects are covered? We do this by following the following steps:

Outline the initial requirements

The purpose of the network should now be defined but we must establish all of the required aspects to create a detailed plan. This includes understanding all of the areas that need coverage and if any areas are to be excluded. The plan will also need to consider any areas that cannot have access points installed. Finally, budget also needs to be considered. When providing a wireless proposal for a client, we would discuss budgets at this stage and advise what options are available.

Create a plan

Coverage can be easily achieved by flooding an area with access points. This, in reality, does not make for a good network. In fact this can introduce problems, not to mention the huge impact to any budget. This is where a good survey and planning will pay off.  A good plan will design an optimum environment for access point count, channel overlap, capacity requirements, signal propagation and coverage. This will in turn provide the right design to meet the wireless network requirements.

Visit the proposed location

No survey or plan can be considered truly complete until a site survey, with active equipment, has been conducted. The reason for this is there is no definitive way to understand what the existing environment looks like and what the signal propagation will be without going to site to conduct an active equipment survey. Here at Coretek, we carry out on-site surveys using the industry leading Ekahau Site Survey software. This takes into consideration the building itself and the factors listed above (devices, coverage, usage) and provides a detailed report on how to configure the wireless network for optimum performance.

Summary

So, should I have a Wi-Fi survey done? Only if you want your wireless network to work well! As described, this is the best way to ensure that the wireless network will work reliably, with the devices you wish to use and with coverage in the areas you need it.

If you have any questions about your wireless network set up or you would like to book your wireless survey contact us today! You can call us on 0800 304 7444 or email us at enquiries@Coretek.co.uk.

Dish Recognition for Pinterest

Recently Pinterest rolled out a new feature called ‘Lens.’ Simply point your camera within the app at anything you like and Pinterest will find and display related ideas. Well they have now added an addition to this feature. It is called Dish Recognition. Now when you open the app, click on the magnifying glass and then the camera icon and point your camera at a food item and snap a picture. You will then see words appear relating to this i.e. an image of an orange could be orange, healthy eating, food etc. But then if you scroll further down the page once you have clicked on one of the relating words, you will be provided with recipes using similar ingredients to the food item you captured. This is a fun and exciting addition to Pinterest. It does however sound a lot like “SeeFood” which was the fake ‘Shazam for food’ app from the comedy Silicon Valley. But Pinterest officials confirmed to The Verge that it was “separate and completely coincidental.”

To enable this add on all you need to do is update your app and you are ready to go. If you don’t actually have Pinterest yet, where have you been?! You can download it here from Google Play and here from the App Store.

There are many apps that work very well with the Surface Dial such as Sketchable, Mental Canvas and Bluebean Revu. This new tool is very impressive however it may be one more for the designers out there. You can purchase it for £79 however it will only work on the Surface Studio and if you do not have one of these yet they could set you back about £2330.
